It was some time after Mac’s mother returned to the U.S. when she discovered she was pregnant but didn’t want to make the father choose between his child and what he felt was his true calling so she never told him about the baby. The missionary that fathered Amanda’s daughter, Mac, was none other than Kay’s son, Brock. Kay had a granddaughter! When Kay finally decided she was ready to return to her life at the Chancellor Estate, she brought her friend Birdie and her granddaughter, Mac. Kay had a new lease on life and her new mission was to find her son, Brock, so he could meet his daughter.

Kay’s new young friend, Mac, had a special secret. There was a letter she always kept tucked close to her heart. She finally confided in Kay about the letter. She explained that this letter was from her father to her mother. She had never met her father and this was all she had of him. Her father had never known about her. As it turns out Mac’s mother, Amanda, worked with her father in India. Her father was a missionary there. Her parents split up when Mac’s mother chose to return to the United States while her father felt his calling was in India.

The daily battles with Jill drove Katherine to untold levels of desperation. Instead of falling back into the bottle again, she made her way to a bridge and considered suicide.
Instead of jumping off the bridge, she was mugged. She found herself lost, disoriented and alone with no car keys or identification. Having been mugged, she looked like she had been on the streets for some time. A homeless girl names Mac brought her to the Genoa City Shelter.
Katherine blended, as she always does, and made friends at the shelter. Mac became her daily companion as well as Birdie, another homeless woman who was also an alcoholic.

Katherine’s drunken crossing out of the property settlement in her and Phillip’s divorce papers finally came back to bite her in the butt. Jill took it to court and the judge granted them equal halves of the Chancellor Estate and Jill and Kay became permanent roommates. Jill entered the estate with an air of entitlement that included demanding round the clock service from Esther, the maid. The stress level at the Chancellor Estate, once a calm and restful environment in which to live, went through the roof. The constant, daily stress nearly pushed Katherine back to the bottle again after years of sobriety.

Jill managed to mess up her marriages to John Abbott and found herself homeless. Never one to spend a night out in the cold, Jill managed to stay at the Chancellor Estate. Fond memories of her love affair with Phillip got the better of her and she began snooping around in the attic for memorabilia. While rummaging around in one box, she found a love letter to her from Phillip and a deed granting her the Chancellor Estate. Jill took these along with Phillip and Kay’s divorce decree (with the crossed out property settlement) to a good lawyer and sued Kay for the estate.

Norman Peterson wanted to get Kay’s money so he asked Esther to marry him. Rex and Kay were wise to his scam and staged a fake wedding, fully intending to keep an eye on the guy. One day Rex caught Esther’s boyfriend/husband, the con man Norman Peterson, breaking into the estate safe. Norman then shot Rex who died of his injuries. Peterson was arrested and went to prison for murdering Rex. Katherine and the Romalottis mourned Rex’s death. Esther was eventually forgiven for bringing a murderer into the Chancellor estate. When Brock popped in unexpectedly to visit his mother, he quickly discovered what was going on and rescued Kay and Esther. Clint, Robert/Morey and Shirley/Lil all went to prison for their crimes but Katherine believed Marge was just a dupe in the scam and saw to it she went free. Esther went back to work at the mansion and when her child, a daughter, was born, she named her Kate in honor of Katherine Chancellor. Rex returned and he and Kay remarried. Unfortunately, Esther was feeling a need for a mate, answered a personal ad and met con man, Norman Peterson.

When Marge was ready to pass for Kay, Clint and his team moved on to phase two of their plan and kidnapped Kay as well as the person who knew her best, Esther. They held them captive well away from the mansion while Marge went to work. Marge took over Kay’s life and did her best to alienate Rex. She sold Chancellor Industries and was so effective at driving Rex away that he filed for divorce. As men do, Rex fell into another’s arms on the rebound. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out whose arms were wide open. Yes, Jill. Rex fell into Jill’s arms on the rebound and even intended to marry her.

When Esther left Kay’s to work for Nina, Kay and Rex hired a houseman, Robert, and a maid, Shirley, to replace her. What they didn’t know was that Rex’s former cellmate, Clint Radison, had found a Kay Chancellor look-alike and Robert (real name Morey) and Shirley (real name Lil) were in on a grand plan to fleece Katherine of everything she owned. The look-alike was a waitress at a diner outside of town. Her name was Marge Catrooke. Robert and Shirley paid close attention to everything that went on at the mansion and coached Marge on how to play Kay believably.

Nina Webster Chancellor (more on her later) managed to lure Esther away from Kay’s employ with promises that Esther would never have to wear a maid’s uniform and Nina would help Esther find a man. One night, they went out on the town and Esther managed to pick up a guy at a bar. The facts that his nickname was Tiny and he was a plumber were all that Esther knew about him. They had a one night stand but Esther convinced herself it was love. After their night of passion, Tiny never called Esther again. It wouldn’t have been such a big deal if not for the fact that Esther was pregnant by Tiny.
